If you are in the market for a video game console, playstation 2 is one of the best! The playstation 2 starter set is a good value, though make sure you like the listed game titles. Paying additional money for games is only a value if you actually play the games.

If you own an original PlayStation, this may be the best investment because you can play your old playstation 1 games on the playstation 2. Since the Sony Playstation 2 has been on the market for a year, it is easier to find in most stores or online. The playstation 2 has a huge library of games as compared to the GameCube or XBox. The playstation2 also doubles as a DVD player.

The XBox looks like it will focus more on the older (and male) video gamer with plenty of sports, action, fighting, racing and general mayhem. The PS2 has a great mix of children's and adult titles.

The Nintendo GameCube is the next in a long line of consoles by Nintendo... the people who brought you Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, etc. The GameCube seems more geared to younger gamers. The GameCube is less expensive and does not double as a DVD player. The advantages? As a dedicated video game console, it plays games very, very well. Nintendo has a strong track record and owns some of the characters your children have grown to like. It's cheaper than either the PS2 or XBox.

I choose the GameCube because I think the game library will appeal to my younger (and female) gamers while still offering plenty of titles for me (like Madden 2002 Football). I think the GameCube has been unjustly criticized as a box solely for young players. The GameCube will eventually have a robust library, but it will develop over the next two or three years. The GameCube was designed with an eye towards making game development easier and the system was tuned to give excellent game-playing performance for the money. As any veteran PC game user will attest, your system is only as fast as the slowest bottleneck.

In summary, picking a video game console depends on your family. A group of power gaming teen boys will crave the XBox, but will celebrate the arrival of a PS2. A more diverse group will probably find value in the Game Cube or the PS2. Sony or Nintendo fans are well served by staying loyal.

The GameCube is very small and can easily be hidden behind the doors of an entertainment center, along with the inevitable mess of controllers, cables and games. The XBox is large, heavy and has a reputation for excessive heat. Ensure you place an XBox in a location with decent ventilation. The PS2 is smaller than the XBox, but fits easily in a VCR "slot" in most entertainment centers. All of the systems are best kept behind a door when not in use.

As for its appearance, PS2 has by far the best case design that would fit nicely in any living room. It is slim, and can be stood upright if more surface area is needed for other audio and video equipment. Another well thought-out feature is the tray-loading system, which means you can fit the unit in a very narrow space.

As for the GameCube, it is purple - that should be bad enough...but it is also (almost) cubic, which will sit nicely with your lego sets and Fisher-Price toys, where it should be kept.

I have owned the console for about half a year now. Looking at some of the earlier reviews, Sony seems to have fixed the few problems they had before. I experience no problems with the controllers or the DVD player function.

For those who don't already own a DVD player, it functions very well to watch rental disks. I have used this as the sole DVD player in the house, and I have no problems viewing any of the discs I own or rented.

As an adult gamer, the titles available for playstation 2 are great. Some good PC games are being ported to playstation2, and I see that it has not been watered down. It even has Firewire and USB ports which means many of the modern computer peripherals can be used with playstation 2 in the future. Mouse, specialized controllers, and keyboards are already supported by some games. In the future, HDs, IP capability, and Linux will be available.

Unfortunately, some good titles are now owned by Microsoft, who will be using this to market their own console, the Xbox. What is ironic is that what will bring the Xbox's demise is the PC gaming market, which runs on Windows themselves. Why would anyone with a decent PC want to bother buying an Xbox? PC is by far the most versatile gaming platform available. Additionaly, PSX has an unparalleled number of titles in the console market, which PS2 can play because of its backward compatibility. Interestingly, PS2 can perform 3D surface smoothing and loading time acceleration on the existing PSX games.

Playstation has more games than both X-Box and Game Cube will ever have. There are so many great games that come out monthly for Playstation, there'll never be a time when you'll regret your playstation 2. If you've owned a PS before, you'll know what I'm talking about.

I am a bit dissapointed in Game Cube. I still have Nintendo 64, and I believe that that is even a better gaming system. The inconvenience of their controller and gameplay loses quite a lot of people from buying their system. If you've experienced the playstation controller already, the playstation 2 one is identical!

The PS2, a system that is for the adult AND the child to enjoy. I'm in my teen years and the Gamecube just wasn't something for me and the X-Box is really something bad to my eyes. I got this system in June 2001 and found that this system is great. But with games like Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, and much more, I really see this system to be a great way to improve gaming. This system literally changed the way we look at a video game console.

Unless you have a vertical stand do NOT place this in the vertical posistion. While your system won't overheat as fast, you could ruin your DVD drive or worse, destroy your Mother Board, it happened to me and I thought that I should let some of you know now being that most Playstation2 games are DVD roms and if your DVD drive is broken, then your system will not work.

I prefer the horizontal position. This way the system will fit just about anywhere! In the vertical position though, you may find your game disc or DVD with a few scratches that you're completely unaware of how they got there. However if you decide to use the horizontal position then purchase a horizontal stand so that you can enjoy your gaming longer.

The system plays DVDs making it that if you can't get a hold of a DVD player, this works just fine. I've never had a problem with DVDs in this system. The system also plays PlayStation 1 games. However, that doesn't mean that you can just kick your Playstation 1 to the curve. There is a slight possibility that a play station 1 game will not work in this system. Some give off some glitches while others just plain old won't work at all.

The system does use the Play Station 1 memory card but for PlayStation1 games only. For Sony Playstation 2 games you need a PS2 memory card, and with this starter pack this is not a problem.

The price isn't as bad as most people think. Actually its somewhat of a bargain. The system is a Playstation 1, a DVD player, a CD player, and of course the Playstation2 game console all in one! Sounds strange, but if you go out and buy all those separately, well the price is a little higher.

The system has a wide variety of features along too. It has an in-system clock that you can set, and it also has several ways to customize the system to be the way you want it to be.

Ovearll this is obviously the best next generation system to buy. Games for much older people, many that are designed for the more mature audiences.

So if you have a child under the age of 12 then most games may not be suitable for him/her. But I would recommend the system as you can find some games that are for the younger age too.
